Finding rehab in Austria starts with identifying the service you need: addiction treatment, mental health care or another form of medical rehabilitation. Austria’s public health portal provides different search tools for these purposes. This guide explains where to look and what to confirm when considering a private provider or a service funded through insurance.
Official Austrian directories to start with
| What you are looking for | Official starting point |
|---|---|
| Addiction counseling and treatment | The public health portal’s addiction support page links to the Austrian addiction-help directory, outpatient and inpatient services, and provincial coordination offices. |
| Psychiatric, psychological or psychotherapeutic support | The mental health support directory brings together doctor, hospital, psychologist and psychotherapist search routes. |
| A medical rehabilitation facility | The Rehabilitationskompass, published by Gesundheit Österreich GmbH, covers inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation for adults, children and young people, with information about services and facilities. |
These resources cover a range of care settings. Check the individual service’s clinical specialty, age criteria and admissions process; an entry does not establish that it offers a particular private program, has immediate availability or can meet your needs.
Clarify the level of care before comparing accommodation
Ask whether the proposed service is a medical admission, a rehabilitation program, day treatment or scheduled outpatient appointments. Establish who assesses suitability, which professionals provide care, and what support is available outside appointment hours. A private bedroom or hotel-style setting does not answer those questions.
If your inquiry concerns an eating disorder, ask specifically about the service’s age range, specialist team, physical-health monitoring and arrangements when more intensive care is needed. Our eating-disorder treatment guide explains questions to use when comparing settings. A general rehabilitation listing should not be assumed to provide specialist eating-disorder treatment.
Check the provider and the actual treatment address
Austria’s official health-service-provider search lists providers registered in the national eHealth directories, including doctors, clinical psychologists, outpatient facilities and hospitals. You can search by name, category, province or postal code. Use the exact operating name supplied by the service, then confirm the relevant professionals’ credentials and the care available at the proposed address.
Ask whether assessments, therapy and accommodation take place together or at separate sites. Request a named admissions contact and a written explanation of the program. Directory information helps you identify a service; it does not replace an individual clinical assessment.
Compare costs and insurance arrangements in writing
Request an itemised estimate for the assessment, clinical sessions, accommodation, medicines, tests and continuing support. Ask which charges are included, what can change during the stay and how cancellation terms apply. Our rehab-cost comparison guide explains how to compare the scope of two quotes.
If you expect an insurer or another payer to contribute, obtain confirmation for the exact provider, location and proposed service before booking. Ask about any referral or authorization requirements and your own payment responsibility. A provider’s description as private or insured care does not establish your personal coverage.
Plan language, travel and continuing care
Confirm the language used in assessments, individual sessions, groups and written instructions. If you are traveling to Austria, coordinate the proposed admission and return-home plan with the professionals already treating you. The international treatment planning guide covers travel, exact addresses and continuity of care.
Before committing, agree how records will be shared, who will provide follow-up and what happens if the initial assessment recommends a different service. Use the official directories above to research relevant options, then confirm current details directly.
